CHAPTER 14

Feather parked a wheelbarrow full of watermelons at the side of the garden, then reached into it and lifted a giant conch from between the melons. Carrying it to the edge of the cliff, she raised it to her lips and blew into it, then turned to Pesha with a bright smile. “He’s on his way.”

“It made no sound.”

“None that we can hear. Sax is a sea dragon. He hears the call of all seashells.” She removed a thin leather strap from around her neck bearing a smaller conch, and tossed it to Pesha.

He caught it easily and studied the beautiful shell.

“Put that around your neck. We call them Sax whistles.”

Pesha slipped the leather strap over his head. Not that he would ever see Sax again, but he liked the shell.

Sax landed at the edge of the cliff with an enormous gust of wind, and Pesha’s hair flew in the great rush of air.

Feather reached up to pet him. “Top of the day to you, big man.”

Sax thumped a giant clawed foot shaking the ground beneath them, snorted, and smoke fizzled above Feather’s head.

“I don’t see him,” Pesha complained.

“Turn your head and look through your peripheral vision.”

Pesha did and saw only a wavering mirage. Then, as if to be made of the air itself, an image began to form, then faded, then formed again. There, before him, stood a beast of epic proportions. Sax was the size of ten elephants. His bright green scales and multicoloured wings sent excitement running through Pesha’s veins. Never had he imagined a creature so beautiful. “Misto!”

Feather’s lyrical laughter filled the air. “Pet him. He loves to have his nose scratched.”

“Where do I find the nose?”

“Show yourself, beast!” Feather ordered.

With a great trumpeting call, Sax materialized before Pesha’s very eyes. Pesha backed up so fast he fell on his ass, and Sax hunched his shoulders and issued something of a hiss, hiss, snicker.

Feather swatted the end of his nose with a soft hand. “Where are your manners?”

“Funny,” Sax growled.

“H-he... speaks?” Pesha asked in amazement.

“Only when the occasion suits him. Sax, this is Master Pesha. Master Pesha, this is Sax. Father loves Pesha, so be good to him.”

There was that word again. Love. Pesha’s heart twisted in agony at the thought of leaving Taliesin.

“Master Pesha,” Sax rumbled.

Pesha stood unsteadily, having no idea how to address a dragon, and bowed. “Ravalo Sax.”

Sax put his nose to the ground and held.

“What’s he doing?”

“Bowing to you in return. Give him leave to rise.”

“Rise, Ravalo Sax.”

Feather laughed again, chimes on the air. “We don’t bow between us, but you must tell Sax. Otherwise, he’ll bow every time he sees you.”

“No bowing,” Pesha called out.

Sax rumbled what Pesha thought might be laughter as he raised his nose from the ground.

“Grab a melon,” Feather instructed.

Pesha went to the wheelbarrow, lifted one of the giant melons, and carted the heavy thing to where Feather stood. Sax drooled long strings of spittle and Pesha backed up again, not wanting his newly recovered clothing soiled.
